LEDs are the way to go, now critters chewing wiring is a whole other problem.

I completely rewired with LEDS so far, so good, but then again, the boat has been stuck on the trailer all summer.

99.9% of all trailer light problems are due to a grounding issue. You can't trust a bolt holding 2 pieces of a trailer together to make a good path to return current. I rewired my trailer and ran a ground wire to each light from the tongue and haven't had a problem in 10 years.
